Pat is an awesome person who is a little bit OC. She chose RAPD as her elective because of my choosing it. We thought that we would have fun developing our very own product and selling it in the end. She wanted a challenge, so she signed up for RAPD.

Gab is a cool and creative person. She chose to try out RAPD at first by going to the orientation. Her first choice for her elective was visual communication but since RAPD seemed like fun (and I was also considering to join RAPD) she decided to go with RAPD.

So far, what we experienced was fun. We learned a lot of new things and had the chance to use our imagination for the product design. We had fun during the feasibility test and are looking forward to improving our product.

Original procedure:
Materials:
- 1 1/2 tsp. jojoba oil
- 7 drops frankincense essential oil
- 7 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
- 5 drops fresh ginger essential oil
- 6 drops wild sweet orange essential oil
- heaping 1/2 tsp. grated beeswax
- eyedroppers
- small nonmetal pan for melting wax
- shot glass or small cup
- small compact or pillbox for finished perfume
Procedure:
1. Pour jojoba oil into the shot glass. Add the drops of all four essential oils to the jojoba oil and stir.
2. Melt the heaping 1/2 teaspoon of beeswax.
3. Remove from heat and stir in the jojoba/perfume blend.
4. Reheat for just 10 seconds, stirring.
5. Immediately pour the mixture into your container.
6. Let cool undisturbed for 15 minutes.
Feasibility recipe:
Materials:
- 1 ½ teaspoon jojoba oil
- ½ heaping teaspoon of grated beeswax
- 20 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
- container for finished perfume
- 1 2
Procedure
1. Heat a small amount of water in a 150 ml beaker.
2. In a 50 ml beaker, add beeswax.
3. Meanwhile, mix jojoba oil and ylang ylang essential oil.
4. Once the water is boiling, add the beaker with beeswax to the beaker with water. Let beeswax melt.
5. Once melted, remove beaker with beeswax and replace with beaker with oil.
6. Add beeswax to the beaker with oil.
7. Let everything mix in heat until all the beeswax dissolves again.
8. Remove from heat then pour into containers. Let sit undisturbed for 15 minutes or until set.
What has been done and the results:
During the feasibility tests conducted from September 26 to October 2, three different batches was made.
The first batch was done on September 26, during which no measuring spoon and no jojoba oil was available. Still, the perfume was still made with roughly measured proportions and castor oil in lieu of jojoba oil. The resulting product smelled good, although it was candle like and was hard to apply on the skin. Moreover, it left a greasy and waxy feel. The product was overall unsatisfactory. After one week of observation, the smell and texture is still the same. The amount produced was also enough for two containers.
After a measuring spoon was procured, the second batch was done on September 27. This time, all the ratios was measured carefully and exactly. Still, castor oil was used instead of jojoba oil. The resulting product smelled really good and was easier to apply on the skin with the texture just like Vick’s Vapor Rub. It was a disappointment however that the greasy and waxy feel did not go away. This one also did not have any change in smell or texture after one week. The amount produced was the same as the previous batch.
On October 2, jojoba oil was successfully acquired and was followed by making a third batch - this time with all the materials needed. The final product had the texture of Vick’s Vapor Rub as well. It had the desired smell and texture we wanted to attain. What’s more, it does not leave a waxy or greasy feel like the previous batches. The jojoba oil is absorbed by the skin leaving the skin free of any after-eekiness. After 6 days, neither the smell or texture changed. The amount produced was as always, enough for two small containers.
The recipe always provides for two containers. Doing the math we get:
One container: ¾ teaspoon jojoba oil, ¼ teaspoon beeswax, and 10 drops of ylang ylang essential oil, one container
250 ml jojoba oil = P570
¾ teaspoon ~ 3.7 ml
3.7 ml ~ P8.50
Beeswax is still undecided since the beeswax used in the test was free from the Unit.
30 ml essential oil = P200
10 drops of essential oil ~ 0.5 ml
0.5 ml ~ P3.40
Container = P10
Each container of perfume will cost not less than P21.90
Improvements to be done:
Although the solid perfume smelled nice, it can only be smelled when the container is almost close to the nose. The scent itself does not readily evaporate to the air and cannot be detected when it is not close. The volatility property of the essence must be improved on to make a perfume that can be smelled without having to go too close to the person.
