Pat is an awesome person who is a little bit OC. She chose RAPD as her elective because of my choosing it. We thought that we would have fun developing our very own product and selling it in the end. She wanted a challenge, so she signed up for RAPD.

Gab is a cool and creative person. She chose to try out RAPD at first by going to the orientation. Her first choice for her elective was visual communication but since RAPD seemed like fun (and I was also considering to join RAPD) she decided to go with RAPD.

So far, what we experienced was fun. We learned a lot of new things and had the chance to use our imagination for the product design. We had fun during the feasibility test and are looking forward to improving our product.

Original procedure:

Materials:

• 1 1/2 tsp. jojoba oil
• 7 drops frankincense essential oil
• 7 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
• 5 drops fresh ginger essential oil
• 6 drops wild sweet orange essential oil
• heaping 1/2 tsp. grated beeswax
• eyedroppers
• small nonmetal pan for melting wax
• shot glass or small cup
• small compact or pillbox for finished perfume

Procedure:
1. Pour jojoba oil into the shot glass. Add the drops of all four essential oils to the jojoba oil and stir.
2. Melt the heaping 1/2 teaspoon of beeswax.
3. Remove from heat and stir in the jojoba/perfume blend.
4. Reheat for just 10 seconds, stirring.
5. Immediately pour the mixture into your container.
6. Let cool undisturbed for 15 minutes.

Feasibility recipe:
Materials:

• 1 ½ teaspoon jojoba oil
• ½ heaping teaspoon of grated beeswax
• 20 drops of ylang ylang essential oil
• container for finished perfume
• 1 2

Procedure
1. Heat a small amount of water in a 150 ml beaker.
2.  In a 50 ml beaker, add beeswax.
3.  Meanwhile, mix jojoba oil and ylang ylang essential oil.
4. Once the water is boiling, add the beaker with beeswax to the beaker with water. Let beeswax melt.
5.  Once melted, remove beaker with beeswax and replace with beaker with oil.
6.  Add beeswax to the beaker with oil.
7.  Let everything mix in heat until all the beeswax dissolves again.
8.  Remove from heat then pour into containers. Let sit undisturbed for 15 minutes or until set.

What has been done and the results:

During the feasibility tests conducted from September 26 to October 2, three different batches was made.  

The first batch was done on September 26, during which no measuring spoon and no jojoba oil was available.  Still, the perfume was still made with roughly measured proportions and castor oil in lieu of jojoba oil.   The resulting product smelled good, although it was candle like and was hard to apply on the skin. Moreover, it left a greasy and waxy feel.  The product was overall unsatisfactory.  After one week of observation, the smell and texture is still the same.  The amount produced was also enough for two containers.

After a measuring spoon was procured, the second batch was done on September 27.  This time, all the ratios was measured carefully and exactly.  Still, castor oil was used instead of jojoba oil.  The resulting product smelled really good and was easier to apply on the skin with the texture just like Vick’s Vapor Rub.   It was a disappointment however that the greasy and waxy feel did not go away.  This one also did not have any change in smell or texture after one week.  The amount produced was the same as the previous batch.

On October 2, jojoba oil was successfully acquired and was followed by making a third batch - this time with all the materials needed.  The final product had the texture of Vick’s Vapor Rub as well.  It had the desired smell and texture we wanted to attain.  What’s more, it does not leave a waxy or greasy feel like the previous batches.  The jojoba oil is absorbed by the skin leaving the skin free of any after-eekiness.  After 6 days, neither the smell or texture changed.  The amount produced was as always, enough for two small containers.

The recipe always provides for two containers.  Doing the math we get:
One container:  ¾ teaspoon jojoba oil, ¼ teaspoon beeswax, and 10 drops of ylang ylang essential oil, one container

250 ml jojoba oil = P570
¾ teaspoon ~ 3.7 ml  
3.7 ml ~ P8.50
Beeswax is still undecided since the beeswax used in the test was free from the Unit.

30 ml essential oil  = P200
10 drops of essential oil ~ 0.5 ml
0.5 ml ~ P3.40

Container = P10

Each container of perfume will cost not less than P21.90

Improvements to be done:

Although the solid perfume smelled nice, it can only be smelled when the container is almost close to the nose.  The scent itself does not readily evaporate to the air and cannot be detected when it is not close.  The volatility property of the essence must be improved on to make a perfume that can be smelled without having to go too close to the person.

When you meet Lyssa, the first thing you'll notice about her is her height. She is about 5'5" tall, with beautiful silky long hair. It might intimidate you at first but you'll be proven wrong. She is very warm and it shows through her radiant smiles. She is an independent and strong-willed person. If you think that's all, wait, there's more! Lyssa is very creative, thoughtful and a good cook too. Just wait until you taste her bread rolls and mango float. Yum! Lyssa is a very dependable and trustworthy friend. There's no one quite like her. I think she joined RAPD to try something new and to learn how to use her creativity to create new products.

Janine's a very shy and quiet - looking person, but once you know her, you'll see another side of her, the corny and fun-loving Janine. She's a very hard-working and responsible student, give her a hard task, she'll panic at first, but, will finish it in no time. Very nice, as people describe her, you'll find only a few people as considerate and as kind as her. I think she joined RAPD because she thought it might help her when she becomes a doctor someday. 

So how's our RAPD experience so far? The best! Believe it or not RAPD gave us an opportunity to finally try working in the lab. It was actually really fun coming up with new products and merging science and the arts. Who knew an STR elective could be enjoyable? We conclude by saying that not all STR related classes are STRessful. RAPD just proved that wrong. 

HOW ARE OUR PRODUCTS? Two hundred fifty grams of Talisay leaves were boiled in 2 liters of distilled water. The leaves were boiled for 20 minutes. After boiling, the leaves were removed and the water with extract was filtered. Then, 200 mL solutions with different concentrations were made. One with 100% extract, one with 75% extract and 25% distilled water, one with 50% extract and 50% water and one with 25% extract and distilled water. The ones with 100% and 50% extract were placed in the refrigerator while the 25% and 75% extracts were placed in the RAPD cabinet. 

How to make Talisay extract (crude method)

1. Hand pick newly fallen dried Talisay leaves and carefully hand wash them to remove debris.

2.Transfer to a casserole and then add water and boil for 45 minutes to release the extract.

3. Let it cool.

4. Transfer to a pitcher with a fine strainer to filter loose stem and leaves from the extract.

5. Add distilled water to dilute.

Results!

QUALITATIVE The extracts had a clear yellowish gold hue. It had a tea smell but after a week of storage the smell faded. 

QUANTITATIVE Five 200 mL solutions with different concentrations each were created from 250 grams of Talisay leaves and 2L of distilled water. A total of 88 pesos was spent for the distilled water.

Julienne is a smart, funny, organized, hardworking and awesome person. We have been teammates for a lot of times already and actually I’ve known her since enrolment (1st year) but we didn’t get to be friends until 3rd year :( I didn’t know why she joined RAPD, I just came in the room during the orientation and boom! she was there. I guess she joined RAPD because (I was there LOLZ) there was this thinking that if you join RAPD, STR2 would be easier for you (it’s true) and maybe to help her in MBB in college, as well. Some random fact about her: she likes patrick star <3

Hazel is predictably sweet, as suggested by her name. She is hardworking and full of ideas. She has the potential to lead a group and run for president! She signed up for RAPD because she wants to apply what she learned in STR and Labtech. She seems to be the SILENT TYPE but she’s actually friendly. We weren’t able to communicate during 1st year and 2nd year because I forgot where I put her number LOL. I think it is meant to be that we became classmates last year. Some random facts about her: Spongebob is her favorite icon; Her designs usually has polka dots.

Obviously, the team name “Sweet Julienne” came from Hazel’s first name and Julienne’s first name put together. Ma’am Bick wants a spectacular and eye-catching team name. Julienne thinks it is eye-catching because people would react on the second meaning of the team, which is “Julienne is sweet.” However, it is true. Sweet is sweet and Julienne is sweet. Julienne’s second name also sounds like honey. While Sweet’s second name is delicious! Oh we’re getting hungry.

EXPERIENCE

At first, the group thought that the project will be easy until we made 3 types. But it was fun to mix chemicals and we felt like we were real scientists :) We were grateful that our project did not interfere much in our STR project. Our knowledge and wisdom in STR have been revived because of Ma’am Bick! We just met some of our classmates this year and it is nice to meet new friends. The movies were also nicely-picked.

ORIGINAL RECIPE

2.2 lb baking soda

10 drops essential oils

Spray bottle

1. Procure 2.2 kg of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

2. Add 10 drops of limonene.

3. Mix.

4. Add 10 more drops of limonene.

5. Transfer to a plastic container.

2.2 lb baking soda

2.2 lb borax

15 to 30 ml essential oils

1. Mix equal parts of borax and baking soda.

2. Add water until it forms a thick paste.

3. Add and mix 1 to 2 tbsp or 15 to 30 mL of essential oils.

4. Place in a plastic container.

WHAT HAS BEEN DONE

Type 1. Gelatin crystals with Zwitsal cologne.

Type 2. Baking soda with Zwitsal cologne and distilled water.

Type 3. Baking soda, borax, distilled water and Zwitsal cologne.

Three varieties of air freshener were made. The first type was made by adding approximately 20 drops of Zwitsal cologne and 30 drops of distilled water to 2 g of water storing crystals. The second air freshener was made by combining 20 g of baking soda, 5 ml distilled water and 1.5 ml Zwitsal cologne in a 250 ml beaker. The third type of air freshener was made by combining 20 g of baking soda, 20 g borax, 10 ml distilled water and 3 ml Zwitsal cologne.   

RESULTS

QUALITATIVE

Type 1: Gelatin air freshener

The air freshener looked like blue gulaman crystals. The crystals were about 1 cm3 in volume. The gelatin smelled like Zwitsal cologne as the researchers expected them to be. However, the scent does not disperse easily compared to the others.

Types 2 and 3: Baking soda air freshener and Baking soda + borax air freshener

Both air fresheners solidified after a week. The ‘strongness’ of the smell of Zwitzal cologne evidently lessened as the days pass. The appearance of the types 2 and 3 look better than the gelatin air freshener because they are not divided into pieces and are easier to be transferred and stored.

QUANTITATIVE

Type 1: Thirty grams of gelatin crystals in four liters of distilled water and cologne cost not less than Php 20.

Type 2: Twenty grams of baking soda were procured from the STR Unit. Zwitsal cologne costs Php 120 for 500mL.

Type 3: All chemicals, 20 g baking soda and 20 g borax, were procured from the STR Unit except for Zwitsal cologne.

All sets are still being tested on their shelf-life. Set 1 has been “good” for 21 days. On sets 1 and 2, they have been “good” for 7 days.

IMPROVEMENTS TO BE DONE

Limonene extract will be used in the next experiment and proper proportions will be observed. Total weight of each type will be identical so that comparisons can easily be made. The packaging will also be improved since only beakers were used for the feasibility test. Packaging will be similar to the ones used in Glade Air Freshener or Albatross.

Maxine is a gentle, chill and fabulous gal. She signed up for RAPD because I believe she has great taste, and a passion for learning that is quenched only by the awesomeness of our teacher. She is a motivated person, and she will not stop anything from getting in her way.

Luke is funny, happy and outgoing guy. He signed up for RAPD because he loves the idea of bringing the best products to society. Together with his drive, and amazing LabTech skillz, he cultivates his growth in RAPD.

The experience so far is amazing and fun and we will cherish it forever.

HOW TO MAKE THE LOTION adapted from eHow.com <3 to you generous people
1. Gather the equipment, generally a bowl, blender, saucepan and container. Making lotion does not require any fancy equipment, and you can find most of it in your kitchen.

2. Love life
3. Gather the ingredients: oils, water and emulsifier. Weigh out the proper amount according to the chosen recipe. Be careful to measure exactly, and it's a good idea to have the appropriate amounts measured out before starting to make lotion.
4. Think positively.
5. Bring the water to a boil. This will lesson the chance that there are any bacteria in it. Set it aside to cool.5
6.Heat the emulsifier and oil together in a saucepan on the stove until they have both melted. Remove from heat. Let sit until the temperature is approximately 110 degrees F
7. Live life to the fullest.
8. Mix the water into the oil mixture. Use a clean glass bowl and a stick blender to add the water to the cooled oil mixture. It will come together and form an emulsion that will look like your traditional lotions
9. Share your blessings with others.
10. Store properly. Unless your recipe called for it, there are no preservatives in your lotion. Lotion must be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

We have done the unthinkable. We have created a lotion from soymilk, beeswax, borax and olive oil that can inhibit hair growth.  The aroma from the lotion is filled with the scent of lavender water, an intoxicating brew. The scent is fragrant at the start, but a strong smell can overpower, so it goes away after 10 minutes to increase satisfaction. After 3 days of shelf time, the lotion's appearance is unchanged.

The group produced around 750ml of soy milk, enough for ten batches, however, we only produced one batch because of time constraints. On a budget of 175 pesos, we were able to make a batch consisting of 750 ml of lotion.

A lip balm containing, our secret weapon that gives us the BANG! in BANG BROTHERS, our best-kept secret, UNTIL NOW:

D-Limonene extract

These ingredients we mix together to achieve the final product. One teaspoon of packed beeswax, a half teaspoon of cocoa butter, and four teaspoons of oil, placed inside a beaker and heated inside a bigger beaker full of water until the wax melts, we end up with our base balm (Tweten, 2011). Upon the addition of the magical potion that is D-Limonene extract, the product becomes the awesome/amazing/revolutionary insectisidal moisturizing lip balm that is so useful, I CANNOT EVEN.

This we have done with utmost care, quality control of ingredients, and preparation except for the last essential step: the addition of D-Limonene extract. Yet we still ended up with a lip balm of astonishing commercial quality, worthy of acclaim. This lip balm possesses a pearly white colour that when applied to your lips, leaves a sheer matte layer that moisturizes, tingles, and most importantly, wards off crawly vermins such as mosquitoes, ants, and the dreaded cockroach.

Sadly, but as expected, we have produced only one miniscule pot of this revolutionary salve, yet not to fret, as this precious unit of lip balm of value not less than thirty pesos, has lasted a week of use and is still of superior condition. 

As research is a continuous process like life itself, we plan to make this lip balm even more amazing. A little smoothing out of the kinks in our process used should be fixed, specifically the heat at which we melt our beeswax, to end up with even smoother and thicker lip balm. Vitamin E that we have omitted in the process undertaken shall be added to ensure that no lips touched by our product should ever experience parchedness again. Artificial coloring might be considered to make the whole experience of using our product even more bewitching.

        Demotivational. Yup, that’s the first word that comes into my mind when i think of Uriel. If I’d ask a question, he’d always answer with a “no” or “panget ka,” but that’s what makes him so fun to be with. Whenever he has a straight face on, you know he;s just playing around with you. His demotivational answers give you a sort of motivation to do something better. He's like the master of reverse-psychology. 

        The most faithful follower of Ma'am Bick, he joined this league of scientific investigators to be remembered as the first manufacturer of honey hand sanitizers in the Philippines.

Witty, funny, clumsy, and irritating. These are some of the characteristics that best describe who Gian is. Whenever he sings those horrible popular songs, you know he’s got his head in the game. The downside would be he gets you stuck with that song inside of your head for the next week. But that’s what’s fun about him. He easily adapts to what is required of him without fail.

He’s here on a mission. He wants to make some money, and if a bit of elbow grease is what it’s going to take, then bring it on! He’s gonna stand his ground until he gets the money he deserves.

THE EXPERIENCE!

Uriel:

IT HAS BEEN AMAZING. Every meeting is fun and we learn a bit every day. The teacher’s AWESOME is also increasing the fun in the classes we have. And my classmates are just so FUN and AWESOME and COOL and JUST BALLS OF SUNSHINE. I have no regrets in joining.

Gian:
It has be such a fun experience so far. The activities and movies were so entertaining. It was really enjoyable to make our own failed product and make random people test it. Hehehehehe. It has been Amazing :D.

WHAT IS MONEY HONEY?

Money Honey is the brand name for our honey based hand sanitizer. Studies show that honey has some anti fungal and antibacterial properties, so why not turn it into a hand sanitizer right?

THEN WHAT?

After the initial making of the sanitizer, we noticed that at first, it felt nice on the skin when applied, then became unbearably/irritatingly sticky. Thus more water was added to dilute the solutions. Initially, there was supposed to be three treatments with one having no honey, but due to time constraints and unavailability of containers, we just made two set-ups, both containing the honey.

EWWWW IT SOUNDS HORRIBLE, WHAT ELSE HAPPENED?

We left the solutions to sit for two days to see if there would be any changes (decomposition, fermentation, etc.), and it turned out that the alcoholic smell became more pungent, but it did not seem that the solutions spoiled. The first treatment with 30% was still sticky after drying, and the 50% solution much more so. Testing for antibacterial ability has not yet been tested.

WHAT NOW?

We want to try fixing the sticky problem and make it smell less of an alcoholic beverage. We are also trying to make the hand sanitizer more like a gel. A friend of ours suggested using a thickener that they used for iChem to make hand sanitizers. We are also trying to find an anti-sticky agent to make our solution less sticky.

Team Name:

Good Working Adorable Persevering Optimistic - these are the traits of a true GWAPO Student. We were able to come up with this name since in order to be good researchers, one must have these qualities and we think that we have what it takes to be good researchers.

Y U Choose RAPD:

When we were looking for an elective, we were looking for a subject that will teach us in generating plausible and profitable idea. We were looking for a course that will help us in developing that idea into a marketable product and sustaining the growth of that merchandise. We hoped to find an elective that will help us with our pre-med courses.

Impressions:

Once we got on with the classes, we saw that the subject was going to be exciting though we expect the subject to be very demanding - full of paper works and laboratory activities. Yet with the small class and awesome teacher, all that was needed was our participation in all the fun.

Project? What Project?:

With the addition of Moringa oliefera, malunggay leaves, with the normal butter cookies, this helps solve the malnutrition being experienced here in the Philippines. But the real project was making the butter cookies marketable. For this to happen, we had to be innovative. We had to adjust the recipe in order to sell the product while striving to reach our goal of a nutritious snack. We had to be hardworking. From production to marketing to after sales evaluation we had to retrieve and analyze the data. And we also had to be strong in order to never give up on our product.

The Learning Process

The learning was really fun. In fact it's hard to pick out a single most fun moment because of all the fun times. But one of the things we enjoyed the most was the marketing of our product because we learned how manly enough you have to be in order to sell your product to unknown people. This was also the most challenging part of the learning process, actually. But the accomplishment of the challenge was the source of the fun.

Oh Memories

We made a lot of memories during RAPD but the most memorable event was when all of the competing teams worked together - when we had our first overnight stay. We tweaked our recipes to perfection and, while waiting for the cookies, the brownies, etc, we were having fun. Only in RAPD did we see competitors working side by side.

What More to Ask?

One of the things we would've liked to do in RAPD was to actually package our product with an official, marketable package. It completes the journey of your product. It shows that your product is finally ready to fight the other goods. I hope that the next RAPD batches will be able to experience this.

Be Warned

RAPD is a fun subject. You get a chance to actually enjoy STR. And it is very rewarding too with its experience. It may even equip you with skills that will help you in your future college degree. But like STR, it requires work, and lots of it. So our advice is to consider the opportunity cost of taking the elective. Whether or not you buy bread is up to how much you value it. Whether or not you take RAPD is up to how much you regard it. And remember that there is a no return policy. Once you're in, you're in.

Bani Team

Team name

Bani is a tree found in Bani, Pangasinan that has been proved to successfully lower blood glucose levels. Since this was the main thing that binded the team together, Bani was used to constantly remind us of how we became friends and how we passed all those trials in STR 1 together.

WHY CHOOSE RAPD?

Even though everyone knows that STR is the hardest subject in pisay since it has the most number of requirements, we still took the risk of getting this elective. We believe that the RAPD elective will best help us in our future researches and hopefully businesses.

Impressions

At first, we thought that the elective would be about marketing and selling stuff only. We had no idea that it would include reportings about the different government policies for product development and patenting. I thought that we would just go to fairs and have free tastes and in turn sell our products. Apparently, none of these happened.

At first, i thought my classmates would be hard to be vibes with. But as weeks and quarters passed, we became closer and more fun. All because of one common interest. Our superwoman teacher, Ma’am Bick. We all knew that Ma’am Bick was a very strict teacher. She had a reputation. But contrary to popular belief, Ma’am Bick was a fun teacher. She is the most game teacher to go out and on a outing. :))

PROJECT?

Our cupcakes aimed to lower the number of protein malnourished children in the Philippines by adding Spirulina platensis to the recipe to increase protein intake while having fun.

FUN part?

I believe that the part when we were trying and tasting the recipes was the most fun. We got to experiment on which combinations tasted better. When the whole elective was at one place baking, that was the best experience ever. It had a sense of competition and cheering all at the same time.

CHALLENGING part?

I think finding the different possible recipes that could be used were the hardest part. We had to check for consistencies and stuff like that. I also think that the sensory evaluation was hard. Since we couldn’t really taste the difference.

Most memorable activity

I believe that the RAPD outing in Jaclyn’s house was the best outdoor activity ever. We had overnight and played rock band. We now have a theme song, “Rebel Girl” complete with choreography. We are hoping to have another outing with the gang soon.

Other Activity?

I would have wanted to have an educational field trip to food companies and see how the process on how they manufacture their products so that we can apply it to out researches. This will make the production more efficient.
